Michael Stangarone, Partner
Michael joined MacDonald & Partners LLP as an associate in 2005 and became a partner in 2011. Michael was called to the Ontario Bar in 2005 after receiving his LL.B. at the University of Western Ontario. He completed his undergraduate degree in political science at University College, University of Toronto in 2001, where he graduated with Distinction and received several awards for academic achievement.
Michael is committed to achieving the best possible outcome for his clients as quickly and as cost effectively as possible. He is an effective negotiator and has resolved many complex and high conflict cases. Michael invokes alternative dispute resolution mechanisms such as mediation and mediation/arbitration to assist parties in reaching final settlement. Michael is a strong advocate in court when settlement is not possible and litigation becomes necessary. His preparation, strong work ethic and persuasive court materials assist in reaching successful results for his clients.
Michael appears at all levels of court in Ontario, including the Ontario Court of Appeal. He has been involved in many important cases including but not limited to Azougarh v. Maliakkal 2010 CarswellOnt 9131 (OCJ) where Michael was successful in having the Court order the child’s step mother to contribute to the high costs associated with the child attending a rehabilitation centre in the United States, and McLean v. Danicic 2010 CarswellOnt 9131 (SCJ), 2010 ONCA (OCA) where a self-represented litigant was reprimanded by the Ontario Superior Court of Justice and his appeal quashed by the Ontario Court of Appeal. Michael has also worked extensively with Phyllis Brodkin in obtaining the return of children wrongfully removed pursuant to the Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction.
Michael has written various articles for legal education programs. He is also a contributing author to the many books written by MacDonald & Partners LLP including Handling A Family Law Matter and the soon to be released, Family Law Arbitration in Canada with Gary Joseph and Ann Wilton.
Michael is a member of the Ontario Bar Association and the Canadian Bar Association. His practice includes all aspects of matrimonial litigation.
When he’s not in the office, Michael enjoys playing tennis and spending time with his family at home or up at the cottage.
